It can be difficult to go asleep after a hectic day. It's more more difficult if there are other sounds keeping you awake, such as traffic or barking dogs.
Listening to rain sounds could be one solution to these problems. You may have heard that the pitter-patter of raindrops can help people fall asleep, and many white noise and sound machines include these recordings. Rain noises, on the other hand, have been shown to be a useful sleep aid in studies.
As a result, we began to wonder: Does this tactic actually work, and if so, why?
Rain sounds, according to Orfeu Buxton, director of Penn State's Sleep, Health & Society Collaboratory, might disguise other louder noises in your environment. (Proactive Life LLC, which makes a smartphone white noise app, has given Buxton grants.)
"Think of a dripping faucet in the next room—it could be a water torture treatment in complete quiet," Buxton explains. "The leak would never be seen if there was a masking background of... breeze in the leaves, mild rain outdoors, or medium distant surf playing on a loop on a speaker."
Todd Arnedt, director of the University of Michigan's Behavioral Sleep Medicine Program, agrees that rain sounds can provide a relaxing background noise.
It's possible that rain noises will literally hit the proper frequencies.
